  1. Suicide is the 12th leading cause of death in the US

  • In 2020 more than 45,979 Americans died by suicide




  • In 2018, suicide was the second leading cause of death among 10 to 24 year olds



  • 18.8% of high school students seriously considered attempting suicide and 8.9% actually attempted suicide

  • 4 out of 5 suicide deaths come after  many warning signs.
  • EX. suicidal threats, previous suicide attempts, showing an obsession with death, depression, and making final arrangements. 
Prevention Methods 
  • Making it more difficult to die in an act of deliberate self-harm. This not only includes the person’s family for example removing firearms from the house but also on a statewide level like building barriers on bridges. Reducing medication dosages as well.
  • Improving access to mental health resources. EX. medical interventions and support groups, effective clinical care for mental disorders and family and community support.

  • History of depression and other mental illnesses

  • Criminal/legal problems

  • Job/financial problems or loss

  • Impulsive or aggressive

  • Substance misuse
